US officials reportedly asked the Democratic Republic of Congo to stop the sale of a copper-cobalt mine to a subsidiary of Norinco, a Chinese arms manufacturer company. The sale had been announced the previous week, but on 8 July DRC’s state-owned miner Gécamines issued a statement saying its board had vetoed the deal.
Norinco presents itself as “the main supplier of Chinese Army weaponry and equipment.” Copper and cobalt are vital metals for manufacturing many types of military equipment including fighter jets.
