On 11 July, CNN revealed that earlier in 2024 US intelligence had discovered the Russian government’s plot to assassinate the chief executive of German arms manufacturer Rheinmetall, Armin Papperger. Rheinmetall has been producing arms for Ukraine during the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine. Moscow also planned to murder other “defense industry executives across Europe who were supporting Ukraine’s war effort” besides Papperger. The Russian plot was foiled by the US and Germany.
