The Houthis appear to be intensifying their campaign to attack commercial vessels passing through the Red Sea, despite the American and British strikes against the Houthis in response as well as naval patrols by US, Britain and a number of other states.
In June 2024, “the number of Houthi attacks on merchant vessels increased to levels not seen since December.”
The most recent reported attacks occurred on 15 July against two vessels in the Red Sea off Al Hudaydah, causing some damage.
Overall, since the start of their campaign against the shipping through the Red Sea (and, as a consequence, through the Suez Canal) in November 2023, by mid-June 2024 the Houthis have attacked or tried to attack more than 70 vessels, sinking two and seizing one.
