The Maersk shipping company stated on 17 July 2024 that disruption to its container shipping via the Red Sea due to the Houthi attacks extended beyond this particular maritime route, affecting trade between Asia and Europe on the global scale, with increasing freight rates and congestion at alternative routes that merchant ships use to avoid the risks of going through the Suez Canal and the Red Sea.
Meanwhile, US and Britain reportedly continued to conduct airstrikes against the Houthis, in particular in Al Hudaydah, in attempt to contain their attacks on commercial shipping.
