On 20 July 2024, Israel conducted an airstrike on the Houthi-controlled port of Al Hudaydah, causing major damage to the port. Israeli planes targeted oil storage facilities and a power plant. The strike was done in response to a Houthi drone attack on Tel Aviv in Israel on 19 July. This is the first known Israeli strike on the Houthi-controlled territory in Yemen.

On 21 July 2024, the next day after Israeli strike on the port of Al Hudaydah, the Houthis launched a missile strike at Israel. A missile was reported downed by Israel’s military before entering its air space, and none of the Houthi-fired missiles reached Israel.
