Ukraine’s military intelligence agency, HUR, indicated it was giving support to the Tuareg fighters in Mali who resist Russian troops operating in the country as well as the local ruling regime.

HUR’s representative made a comment to this effect on 29 July 2024, days after a successful Tuareg operation that inflicted a heavy defeat on the Russian and Malian regime forces near the town of Tinzaouaten on the Mali-Algeria border. According to HUR, Tuareg fighters were given “information, and not only information” that helped them win the battle.

Also on 29 July, Ukrainian media outlet Kyiv Post published a photo of Tuareg fighters with a Ukrainian flag. Kyiv Post’s sources in the “defense and security forces of Ukraine” said the photo was taken after the battle in question. So did a HUR source of another Ukrainian media outlet, LIGA.net.
