Canadian frigate HMCS Montréal transited through the Taiwan Strait sometime in July 2024, indicated Canada defense minister’s statement from 31 July. The minister also said this showed Canada’s commitment to the “free, open and inclusive” Indo-Pacific.
The United States has long been conducting regular transits of the Taiwan Strait by warships in an effort to contain and deter China’s growing military pressure on Taiwan. Lately, Canada has joined the United States in doing such naval transits.
