Ukraine launched a new offensive on 6 August 2024, attacking across the border into Russia’s Kursk Oblast. With the Russian border only lightly defended and the Russian military command apparently surprised, Ukrainians advanced rapidly, reaching the depth of 10-15 kilometers within the Russian territory during 6 August and by the afternoon of 7 August.
Previous Ukrainian operations in Kursk and Belgorod Oblasts had been temporary raids with forces limited in number. This Ukrainian offensive, however, appears to be aiming to take and hold territory.
