European Theater Update, 15 August 2024

The fronts of the Russo-Ukrainian War remained dynamic during the last few days.

Following their original deep breakthrough into Russia’s Kursk administrative region during 6-8 August, the Ukrainians’ advance relatively slowed in tempo as they consolidated their gains and sought to widen the area of their offensive to secure the flanks of the forces operating deep in the Russian territory.

Ukrainians continued to attack in the area of town Korenevo on the road toward Rylsk, in the area south of Korenevo between this town and the national border, in the area about 15-17 kilometers south of Lgov, and in the areas east, northeast and southeast from Sudzha. Ukrainians also consolidated control on this latter town and its surroundings. In addition, in the recent days they launched attacks on the western border of the Belgorod administrative region.

With numbers of Russian forces in the Kursk region still insufficient to stabilize the front, situation in the area of the Ukrainian offensive remained fluid with much depending on the content of the Ukrainian command’s plans regarding its further development.

The Russians, in the meantime, continued their offensive in Ukraine’s Donetsk administrative region. They closely approached the city of Toretsk were street fighting appeared likely to begin in the near future, and kept advancing in the direction of cities Pokrovsk and Myrnohrad.
