East Asian Theater Update, 2 September 2024

Chinese vessels continued their efforts to push the Philippine coast guard out of the Sabina Shoal area.

Sabina Shoal is located within the Philippine Exclusive Economic Zone. In April 2024, the Philippines stationed a coast guard vessel, Teresa Magbanua, at the shoal. China, seeking to take control of the maritime area in question from the Philippines, and unwilling to be hindered in this objective by the Philippine coast guard’s presence, has been trying to push it out.

This resulted in a number of incidents between the two sides’ vessels happening lately, including on 31 August, when Chinese vessels made repeated attempts to ram Teresa Magbanua while it was patrolling near Sabina Shoal. The Philippine vessel, however, continued to operate in the area despite the Chinese pressure.

The incidents caused by China’s attempts to push the Philippines out of the maritime areas it wishes to take over, including but not limited to Sabina Shoal, are set to keep happening in the future.
