Israel continued to develop its stepped up actions against Hezbollah aiming to thwart Iran‘s efforts that are aimed at preparations for the destruction of the state of Israel in the long term, and at prevention of Israel’s elimination of Hamas as the military and political entity in control of the Gaza Strip in the short term.
On 27 September 2024, Israel killed the head of Hezbollah since the early 1990s, Hassan Nasrallah. In addition, during these last few days Israel eliminated a number of other high-ranking leaders of Hezbollah, and conducted a wider airstrike campaign hitting personnel, weapons and infrastructure of this Iranian asset that is entrenched in the southern and eastern Lebanon.
Hezbollah kept firing rockets at Israel, but compared to the Israeli air campaign the Hezbollah response has been feeble. The Iranian asset retains its huge arsenal of rockets it can fire at Israel, but has so far refrained from doing so. At the same time, while the Israeli air campaign has been highly effective, it has also retained space to step it up and hit targets in Lebanon much more intensely than it is doing currently.
During the last few days, Israeli preparations for a possible ground operation against Iranian assets in Lebanon have become apparent, including concentration of troops and armor near the Lebanese border.
Moreover, reports have emerged that Israeli Special Forces are already conducting raids in Lebanon, hitting Hezbollah “infrastructure, including weapons sites and command and control centers.” The raids could be a further sign of preparation for a large-scale ground operation, although actual military plans of the Israeli leadership remain unknown.

On 29 September 2024, Israel heavily bombed Houthi targets in Yemen, including power plants as well as the ports of Hodeidah and Ras Issa.
On 27 and 28 September, the Houthis had fired ballistic missiles at Israel, which the latter’s missile defenses intercepted. This missile fire by the Houthis was followed by the 29 September Israeli airstrikes.
This is a second such Israeli air attack targeting the Houthis, after the one on 20 July 2024.
