Late on 30 September 2024, Israeli ground troops crossed into Lebanon at a number of locations. The initial Israeli advance appeared to be limited both in the number of troops and in the territorial depth of incursion.
Israel’s stated objective as of 1 October was to dismantle the Hezbollah military infrastructure near the Israel-Lebanon border. It remained unclear at that point whether Israel intended to retain its military forces within Lebanon in the long term, and how far its land war with Hezbollah was going to expand in its scale at later stages of the armed conflict.
