On 14 October 2024, China conducted large-scale military maneuvers in the seas and airspace around Taiwan. According to the Taiwanese authorities, maneuvers involved 34 Chinese naval ships and 125 aircraft.
The Chinese themselves stressed the fact that their forces operated around the whole island of Taiwan during the maneuvers, “involved all wings of the army and were designed to simulate attacking Taiwan by land, sea and air.” The Chinese foreign ministry said the maneuvers “simulated military assaults and port blockades” against Taiwan.
This is the latest development in the consistent military pressure that China has been applying against Taiwan during the recent years. This gradually escalating process is likely to continue in the next few years, until China at some point actually attempts to conquer Taiwan.
