On 16 October 2024, Russian sources reported that Russia’s Africa Corps troops had arrived in Equatorial Guinea in mid-August 2024. Their presence was noted in the country’s island capital Malabo, and, by September, in the city of Bata in the continental part of the country.
Reportedly, Russian troops “play a political role, demonstrating Russia’s support to the current authorities” of Equatorial Guinea.
On 26 September, the African country’s president Mbasongo had publicly thanked Moscow for “sending to our country instructors who support strengthening security and defense of our country.”
