On 18 October 2024, South Korea officially confirmed that North Korea had sent 1,500 special forces troops to Russia. The troops reportedly were undergoing “training and acclimatizing at local military bases” in preparation for deployment to the frontlines of the Russo-Ukrainian War.

The 1,500 troops had been moved to Russia by ships of the Russian Pacific Fleet during 8-13 October 2024. South Korean intelligence stated they expected more troops to be shipped soon.

Also, according to the South Koreans, North Korea had sent “more than eight million artillery and rocket rounds” to Russia during its war against Ukraine.

On 17 October, the head of Ukraine’s military intelligence service, Kyrylo Budanov, said that 11,000 North Korean infantry troops were training in eastern Russia in preparation for deployment against Ukraine. Budanov added that their training was set to be concluded by 1 November, and that the North Korean troops would be “using Russian equipment and ammunition.”
