MENA Theater Update, 22 Oct. 2024

Israel has clarified its war objective on the Lebanon front, the Axios reported on 21 October 2024.

It involves a guarantee that “Hezbollah doesn’t rearm and rebuild its military infrastructure in the areas of southern Lebanon that are close to the border,” backed by the Israeli military’s right to engage in “active enforcement.”

While Israel had previously made it clear that it does not intend to exercise effective control of Lebanon’s territory along the border with Israel on a permanent basis, Israeli stated objective in Lebanon now amounts to the loss of such effective control of that territory by Iran‘s military and political asset Hezbollah.

Iran, through Hezbollah, has been exercising effective control over parts of the Lebanese territory, including the area along the Israel-Lebanon border. Israel, by insisting on permanent removal of Hezbollah’s military infrastructure from the border area, seeks to eliminate Iranian control. It would presumably be replaced by the Lebanese armed forces and the UN international force actually exercising control of the border area.

With Israeli war aims thus specified, it has become clear that the current Israel-Hezbollah armed conflict constitutes a Focal Contest (see the Watch Framework). The Modern Great Game Map has been updated to reflect this development.
