The Ukrainian forces’ situation in the south Donbas region worsened considerably in late October and early November 2024.

Russians advanced in the area of Kurakhove, in particular on both flanks of this city.

On the northern flank, Russians took Selydove and Hirnyk, proceeding to advance west of these towns rather rapidly.

On the southern flank, they advanced even more rapidly in the direction of the road connecting Kurakhove to the rest of the Ukrainian-controlled territory.

This fast Russian advance aimed at creating a threat of encirclement for Kurakhove, which would force Ukrainian defenders of this city and the adjacent frontline to retreat in order to avoid getting trapped.

A fall of Kurakhove as a result of such a successful flanking operation could allow Russians to then advance further westward in the direction of the administrative border between Donetsk and Dnipropetrovsk Oblasts of Ukraine.
