On 4 November 2024, Ukraine confirmed that combat had commenced between Ukrainian and North Korean troops on the frontline for the first time. The fighting reportedly took place in Russia‘s Kursk Oblast.
Ukrainians report the presence of about 11,000 North Korean troops in Kursk Oblast. Ukrainian defense minister Umerov said he expected that their number on the frontline could rise to 15,000.
North Korea thus became the first country to join the Russo-Ukrainian War directly with its combat troops.
