On 19 November 2024, the United States recognized Edmundo González as the president-elect of Venezuela.
Gonzalez had won the presidential election on 28 July 2024. The election was then stolen by the Maduro regime which retained power despite losing all remnants of democratic legitimacy.
Prior to the election the Biden administration had attempted to reach an accommodation with Maduro regarding democratic transition. Their latest move comes after that previous approach failed completely, and might prepare ground for a more robust US stance regarding Venezuela in the future.
