On 21 November 2022, the United States revealed it had a special military task force “to support Armed Forces of the Philippines activities in the South China Sea.”
It is called “Task Force-Ayungin” after the Philippine name of the Second Thomas Shoal which China has been seeking to wrestle from the Philippine control during the recent years, and reportedly involves American “intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance” support to the Philippine forces.
