In the three days of 27-29 November 2024, the offensive launched by the Syrian rebels in the region of Idlib-Aleppo, achieved great and rapid success.
The rebels advanced quickly, taking numerous towns and villages as the Assad regime defenses crumbled. Strikes by the Russian and Assad regime air forces proved ineffective in slowing the rebels down.
On 29 November, the rebels entered the city of Aleppo, taking its western districts. They also took over the stretch of a key Syrian highway between Aleppo and Maarat al-Numan. This included them taking the city of Saraqib.
While by the evening of 29 November it was obvious that the Assad regime was suffering a major military disaster in north Syria, it was not yet clear what scale this disaster would take due to unknown strength of reserves the rebels had for the further development of their offensive.
