MENA Theater Update, 6 Dec. 2024

The lightning speed of changes in territorial control taking place in Syria increased further on 6 December 2024.

After taking Hama in central Syria on 5 December, the Syrian rebels continued to advance in the southern direction, reaching the northern outskirts of Homs the next day. The Assad regime forces failed to offer serious resistance. The rebels continued their rapid takeover of cities, towns and villages, including Salamiyah, Al-Rastan and Talbiseh among others. The rebels also continued to expand their control in the scarcely populated areas southeast of Aleppo and east of Hama including the important crossroads at Ithriya.

At the same time, the rebels in south Syria, who in the previous years had surrendered after being defeated by the Assad forces with strong Russian and Iranian military support, launched a renewed rebellion, beginning to take over some areas between Damascus and the city of Daraa.

In east Syria, the Syrian Kurds and the coalition of local forces centered around them continued their participation in the division of Assad’s inheritance, taking over Assad-controlled territories south and southeast of Raqqa, and in the area of Deir Ez Zor.

By the evening of 6 December, the manner and speed of the collapse of Assad’s position in Syria appeared to exceed all expectations.
