On 9 December 2024, Australia announced it had signed a treaty with Nauru, agreeing to give it financial and other aid in exchange for Nauru’s plegde ot to enter any security pacts without Australia’s assent.
The treaty has been made for five years, and is designed to “lock out China from engagement in the security sector, in particular policing and military.”
Australia’s move, which follows a similar one made in Tuvalu in November 2023, makes Nauru Australia’s Geopolitical Facilitator (see the Watch Framework).
