Continental South Asian Theater Update, 13 Dec. 2024

As of 5 December 2024, the Myanmar National Democratic Alliance Army (MNDAA) – one of the groups fighting against against the the military junta in Myanmar, announced a unilateral ceasefire as a consequence of influence exerted by China, saying it would “pursue more formal peace talks.” China’s Foreign Ministry “welcomed the move.”

The MNDAA is the second rebel group under the Chinese influence to announce a ceasefire in its fight against the junta. The first one, the Ta’ang National Liberation Army’s (TNLA), did so on 26 November 2024.

The MNDAA’s announcement is another development in China’s efforts to undermine the pro-democracy National Unity Government of Myanmar in its war against the junta.
