As reported on 4 December 2024, the US confirmed it would “provide an additional $600 million in financing to support the development of the Lobito Corridor, which will connect Zambia’s Copperbelt to the Atlantic Ocean” at Angola’s port of Lobito.
The Zambia-Lobito rail line is set to begin construction in 2026.
The Lobito Corridor is America’s joint project with Angola, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Zambia, designed to transport DRC’s and Zambia’s natural resources to the Angolan Lobito port in order to make them accessible for the US its allies.
The resources involved include copper and cobalt which are vital metals for manufacturing many types of military equipment, as well as for a number of categories of hi-tech civilian products.
