As of December 2024, China transferred into a new stage in its military maneuvers around Taiwan, conducting “large-scale drills with no fanfare to normalise a heightened military presence.”
Unlike previous exercises, the new maneuvers are not announced in advance and amount to regular Chinese military presence in the maritime area around Taiwan.
With this tactics, China seeks to normalize such military presence, in order to be prepared to turn the maneuvers into an actual attack against Taiwan unexpectedly at the moment Beijing decides to do so.
