Following the defeat of Iran’s military and political asset Hezbollah, critical weakening of Hamas, and the fall of the Assad regime, the Houthi regime controlling part of Yemen’s territory came to the forefront of the struggle against Israel waged by Iran, its allies, and its assets.
The Houthis had started drone and missile attacks on Israel back in October 2023, and continued them since. Israel conducted series of airstrikes against the Houthis in Yemen in response in July, September and December 2024.
By late December 2024, the previously occasional strikes by both sides transformed into what amounted to a continued exchange of fire, after the Houthis intensified their missile strikes on Israel, and the latter stepped up airstrikes against the Houthis in an effort to deter them.
