Amid fierce fighting on the frontlines of the Russo-Ukrainian War, the Russians continued to gradually advance in the southern part of Donbas region.
Slowly pushing forward while suffering enormous losses, the Russians took the area south of the city of Pokrovsk in preparation for the planned offensive against the city itself.
Further south, by early January 2025, the Russians completed the capture of the city of Kurakhove after prolong street fighting that had commenced back in October 2024.
To the north, the Russians took most of Toretsk, with the Ukrainians retaining only the city’s northern and northwestern outskirts by 8 January 2025.
