On 9 January 2025, Lebanon‘s parliament elected army chief Joseph Aoun the country’s president. Aoun belongs to the side of Lebanon’s political spectrum that favors their country’s independence from the Iranian geopolitical agenda, and seeks to weaken the sway of Iran’s military and political asset Hezbollah.
Aoun’s election had long been resisted by Hezbollah and other Iranian political satellites in Lebanon. Following a political opening created through the recent military defeat of Hezbollah by Israel, the United States, France and Saudi Arabia applied pressure on Lebanese politicians in order to bring about Aoun’s election, which ultimately succeeded on 9 January.
