China continues its efforts to subvert and undermine the struggle of Myanmar’s pro-democracy forces engaged in a civil war against the military junta.
On 20 January 2025, Chinese foreign ministry announced that on 18 January the junta had signed a ceasefire deal with one of the rebel groups, the Myanmar National Democratic Alliance Army (MNDAA), in the Chinese city of Kunming. The MNDAA is a China-influenced group that had announced a unilateral ceasefire back in early December 2024.
As the civil war in Myanmar continues with pro-democracy forces achieving a number of successes in the recent months, China has been seeking to prevent their victory over the junta by splitting particular rebel groups that are under its influence from the war effort.
