On 28 January 2025, Israel announced that its troops were going to retain control over the summit of Mount Hermon in Syria indefinitely.
Israel had taken over the summit on 8 December 2024, as the Assad regime was falling to the Syrian rebels’ offensive.
Prior to 28 January, however, it was not quite clear whether Israel’s control over the Mount Hermon summit was intended to be temporary or indefinite.
The summit is important from the military point of view, overlooking both the area of Damascus and Israel’s Golan Heights.
