On 31 January 2025, Reuters reported that the US was “pressuring top Lebanese officials not to allow Hezbollah or its allies to nominate the country’s next finance minister.” The US reportedly seeks to prevent Hezbollah and other Lebanese proxies of Iran from having their representatives as members of Lebanon’s government or at least from holding key positions in it.

This comes after the US, together with France and Saudi Arabia, secured appointment of a candidate free form the Iranian influence, Joseph Aoun, to the post of the president of Lebanon on 9 January 2025.

Following the 19 January 2024 ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, the Houthis ceased their attacks both on Israel and on the shipping in the Red Sea. Consequently, Israel as well as the USBritain coalition have also stopped their airstrikes against the Houthis.

Hostilities are likely to resume in both cases if there is new fighting between Israel and Iran or its satellites including Hamas.
