On 14 February 2025, China signed a “comprehensive strategic partnership” agreement with the Cook Islands.
The deal reportedly “established a framework for engagement on ‘priority areas’ like trade and investment, tourism, ocean science, aquaculture, agriculture, infrastructure climate resilience and disaster preparedness.”
The agreement continues China’s efforts to gain geopolitical sway over the island nations of Oceania.
