MENA Theater Update, 26 Feb. 2025

On 25 February 2025, two days after issuing a demand for the demilitarization of Syria’s three provinces south of Damascus by the country’s new (former rebel) government, Israel hit military sites in that area with airstrikes.

The targets reportedly included “headquarters and sites containing weapons.”

That same day, Israeli authorities stated that “the presence of military assets and forces in the southern part of Syria constitutes a threat” to Israel, that the strikes were part of a “new policy” of ensuring a “demilitarized southern Syria,” and that any Syrian attempt to establish military presence in the Israeli-designated demilitarized area “will be met with fire.”

By February 2025, the armed conflict between Syria and the SDF coalition led by the Syrian Kurds, taking place in the north and northeast of the country, reached a pause with no major ground fighting being reported.

Whether the conflict would restart appeared contingent on the outcome of talks between the Syrian government and the Syrian Kurds. Meanwhile, Turkey continued conducting airstrikes against the Syrian Kurdish targets.
