On 13 March 2025, the United States hit Russia‘s “oil, gas and banking sectors by further restricting Russian access to U.S. payment systems.”
Since the start of the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine on 24 February 2022 and the subsequent introduction of American sanctions against Russia, the US had maintained an exemption “that allowed specific energy transactions involving sanctioned Russian banks to continue.” With the US now removing this exemption, the Russian banks “may no longer access US payment systems to conduct major energy transactions.”
This American decision “makes it harder for other countries to buy Russian oil, thus limiting its global supply.”
