China has been constructing platforms in a disputed part of the Yellow Sea known as Provisional Maritime Zone where the exclusive economic zones of China and South Korea overlap. South Korean officials are concerned that China is doing this in an effort to “stake its claims” in the disputed maritime area at the expense of South Korea. In February 2025, South Korean research and coast guard vessels sent to investigate the Chinese structures were forced to retreat by pressure from the Chinese coast guard and other ships.

In response, on 26 March 2025, South Korea announced that it had “set up a ‘reciprocal’ platform in a disputed area of the Yellow Sea.”
