Israel has expanded its airstrikes against Syria’s military infrastructure beyond the three southern provinces of Quneitra, Deraa and Suweida which it had previously declared a demilitarized zone, targeting several bases in central Syria.
On 2 April 2025, Israeli officials stated that the strikes “convey a message to Turkey” – “do not establish a military base in the Syria and do not interfere with Israeli activity in the country’s skies.”
With the fall of the Assad regime, Syria transferred from the Iranian and Russian sphere of influence to the Turkish one. Israel’s latest activities in Syria seek to prevent the development of a sort of Turkish military presence in the country that could allow Ankara to threaten Israel’s security.
