MENA Theater Update, 11 Apr. 2025

On 9 April 2025, Israel and Turkey launched talks regarding Turkey’s plans to expand its military presence in Syria and Israel’s adverse reaction to this.

Previously, Israel had been conducting airstrikes on the bases in central areas of Syria where Turkey intends to station its troops, messaging that it was very much against Ankara’s intentions in this regard.

According to Israeli sources, during the talks with Turkey, Israel “made it unequivocally clear that any change in the deployment of foreign forces in Syria – and in particular the establishment of Turkish bases in the Palmyra area – is a red line and will be considered a breaking of the rules.”

The talks between the two powers are likely to continue, each side seeking to secure their differing objectives concerning Syria.
