Over the period of 12-14 April 2025, the Syrian Kurds transferred control over the Tishrin dam area in northern Syria to the forces of the new Syrian government.

The move came amid negotiations between Damascus and the Kurds, in which the Syrian authorities have been demanding integration of the Syrian Kurdish forces, and the territory under their control, into the Syrian state.

With the US, which has been partnering with the Syrian Kurds, apparently preparing to withdraw from Syria, and facing constant threat of a new Turkish ground offensive against them, the Syrian Kurds see little alternative to giving in to the Syrian government’s demands, trying to do so gradually and with the best conditions possible under the existing circumstances.
