The Japanese press reported on 6 July 2025 that Japan had made the decision to “export used navy destroyers to the Philippines to strengthen its deterrence against China’s maritime expansion.”
The plan involves “six Abukuma-class destroyer escorts in service by the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force.” He Philippine navy’s current combat ships are all smaller than the destroyers it is set to receive from Japan.
