MENA Theater Update, 18 July 2025

During the period of 14-16 July 2025, Israel acted to maintain the demilitarized zone it had previously announced in south Syria.

Following clashes between the Druze and the Arab tribes in the province of Sweida, the government of Syria sent its military forces to the province. These forces soon engaged in clashes against the Druze.

On 14 July, Israel launched airstrikes against the Syrian military forces operating in and moving towards Sweida. These strikes continued during the subsequent two days while the Damascus forces and Arab tribes fought against the Druze in Sweida.

On 16 July, Israel also hit government targets in Damascus, including the defense ministry building and a target in the vicinity of presidential palace.

Syria withdrew its military forces from Sweida during the night of 16-17 July.

Israeli official statements during the crisis indicated, besides support for the Druze, an intent to retain the demilitarized zone in south Syria including Sweida.

The Yemen government-affiliated forces stated on 16 July 2025 that they had seized a very large shipment of weapons sent by Iran to the Houthis by sea.

Iran’s effort to rearm the Houthis, as well as a number of its other activities, show that despite Iran’s recent series of setbacks, including the loss of Syria, catastrophic weakening of its asset Hezbollah, the demolishment of its ally Hamas, and its inability to offer resistance to the Israeli air force in the Iranian sky, have done nothing to make it reconsider its geostrategy aimed against Israel and the United States.
