On 28 August 2025, it was reported that China’s coast guard intercepted the Philippines’ ships that were on their way to resupply the Philippine garrison at the Second Thomas Shoal – a feature that China has been seeking to take over.
The Chinese also signaled their future intentions in this regard by deploying to the area a heavy tugboat that may be able to remove from the Second Thomas Shoal the grounded vessel that the Philippine military had been using to exercise control over the feature.
