19 Russian military drones crossed into Poland during the night of 9-10 September 2025.
The drones in question were of the Gerbera type, “a cheap multi-purpose unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) widely used by Russia as a decoy to distract air defence systems during large-scale attacks on Ukraine,” making it unlikely that Russia attempted to actually hit targets within Poland during the incursion.
Russia’s purpose likely was to check both the Polish and NATO forces’ practical military reaction in the conduct of air defense, and political reaction of the Alliance to the blatant violation of the Polish air space. Such a test could be conducted by Russia in preparation for the future operations targeting NATO member states.
