The United States has been trying to get the Taliban to give back the Bagram military base north of Kabul to the Americans.
President Trump said he wanted the US to regain control of the Bagram base on 18 September 2025. That same day, Taliban officials rejected this possibility.
Media reports from 19 September revealed that the US had been “in discussions with the Taliban about re-establishing a small U.S. military presence at Afghanistan’s Bagram air base,” with the talks involving “a possible economic deal” among other issues. That same day, Trump reiterated that “he was speaking with Afghanistan about regaining control of the Bagram air base.”
On 21 September, Trump wrote: “If Afghanistan doesn’t give Bagram Airbase back to those that built it, the United States of America, BAD THINGS ARE GOING TO HAPPEN!!!”
