On 28 September 2025, the ruling party of Moldova aiming to maintain the country’s independence from Russia won the general election, defeating the political forces affiliated with Moscow.
The electoral victory came despite Russia’s massive efforts to interfere in the process of the elections and cause instability in Moldova.
Russia-affiliated political leader Igor Dodon falsely “claimed victory even before results came in and called for protests outside parliament in the capital Chisinau.” As of 29 September, pro-Russian protest rallies against the election outcome remained small.
