The Washington Post’s material from 29 September 2025 described an element of China’s political and covert subversion against Taiwan conducted in preparation for the planned future invasion of the island.
The Chinese Unification Promotion Party (CUPP) in Taiwan, which maintains close ties to the Chinese officials and is described by the President of Taiwan Lai Ching-te as “a conduit for Chinese espionage,” “promotes the idea that Taiwan should be absorbed into China.”
The CUPP assets “advance Beijing’s interests in Taiwan, including threatening critics of the Chinese Communist Party, trumpeting Chinese propaganda and even trying to recruit spies for China on the island.”
Taiwanese officials state that while the CUPP assets can be helping China “with organizing and gathering intelligence during peacetime,” in wartime “they can become highly effective collaborators from within,” and “carry out sabotage everywhere.”
