China successfully interfered in the 18 October 2025 internal election in the opposition Kuomintang (KMT) party in Taiwan, supporting the election of Cheng Li-wun as the party’s leader. Chinese social media accounts were spreading disinformation about Cheng’s opponent.
China’s leader Xi Jinping congratulated Cheng Li-wun on 19 October, calling for efforts “to advance reunification,” and saying the Chinese Communist Party and the KMT should strengthen their “common political foundation” and “unite the vast majority of people in Taiwan to deepen exchanges and cooperation, boost common development, and advance national reunification.”
Cheng Li-wun opposes increase in Taiwan’s defense spending that is part of the preparations to repel the future Chinese attempt to conquer Taiwan.
