A Washington Post material from 3 November describes China’s support to the junta in Myanmar’s civil war, as “China has pledged billions of dollars’ worth of aid to Myanmar’s junta, and Chinese state-owned companies are increasingly helping to arm the military.”
In addition, “Chinese officials have also worked to grant greater legitimacy to Min Aung Hlaing, the junta leader who is under sanctions by most of the West,” Xi Jinping having “met publicly with Min Aung Hlaing twice this year, boosting his political credibility to the highest level it’s been since the 2021 coup.”
Previously China’s efforts in the context of the civil war in Myanmar concerned the China-Myanmar border area, but now “its recent efforts suggest it’s extending its sphere of influence beyond the border.”
