On 3 December 2025, the southern Yemeni separatist Southern Transitional Council, which is aligned with the United Arab Emirates, launched an offensive against the government of Yemen, which is backed by Saudi Arabia.
The offensive rapidly proved successful and resulted in the STC’s capture of most of the Hadhramaut province that same day. On 4 November, the STC advanced into the Al Mahrah province, capturing large part of it, and taking over the eastern port of Nishtun by 16 December. By 8 December, the STC also captured most of the Shabwa province.
In addition, the Yemeni government’s and Saudi Arabia’s forces and functionaries had to evacuate from Aden, which prior to that had functioned as the political center of the part of Yemen free from the Houthi control. The STC took over the presidential palace in Aden.
