MENA Theater Update, 24 Dec. 2025

On 22 December 2025, in Jerusalem, Israel, Greece and Cyprus agreed to “reinforce our ongoing trilateral cooperation on security, defense, and military matters” in eastern Mediterranean.

The diplomatic move by the three nations was made in the face of Turkey’s assertiveness in the region. In reference to Turkey, Israel’s Prime Minister Netanyahu said at the summit with the Greek and Cypriot leaders: “To those who fantasize they can reestablish their empires and their dominion over our lands, I say: Forget it. It’s not going to happen. Don’t even think about it.”

On 16 December, Greek media had reported “that Israeli, Greek, and Cypriot officials were discussing creating a joint rapid reaction force to protect critical regional infrastructure in the Mediterranean,” with the plan reportedly envisioning “the creation of a 2,500-strong brigade-level reaction force comprised of 1,000 troops from both Israel and Greece and 500 from Cyprus.”

Washington Post’s material from 23 December 2025 revealed some details of Israel’s activities in Syria.

Reportedly, since 17 December 2024, Israel has been supplying the Syrian Druze forces in Suweida province with arms and other material aid. The flow of weapons reportedly “peaked” in April 2025, and decreased in August.

Wary of a potentially consolidated and strengthened Syria led by former rebels and geopolitically aligned with Turkey, Israel has been hindering Damascus’s establishment of control over the Druze-populated Suweida province.

According to the Washington Post report from 23 December 2025, Syrian Kurd forces have been training Syrian Druze fighters opposing the control of the Druze-populated Suweida province by the government of Syria:

“To help the Druze cause, the SDF also trained Syrian Druze, including women, in Kurdish areas in northern Syria — a relationship that continues to this day, according to a senior Kurdish official, a Syrian Druze commander and a former Israeli official.”

The support of the Syrian Druze by the Syrian Kurds also reportedly included delivery of some arms, such as anti-tank missiles.
